A SIMULATED CINNABAR LACQUER OCTAGONAL BOX AND COVER

Intricately moulded to the cover with the Eight Buddhist Emblems, ba bao, surrounding a central shou character, reserved on a flower- head, the sides with classic scroll borders, the ground covered in iron-red glaze to simulate lacquer, the interior and base glazed white (nick to edges)

Lot Essay

A Qianlong-marked lobed box imitating lacquer and decorated with prunus on a diaper ground was included in the Min Chiu Soicety Exhibition of Porcelain of the Ch'ing Dynasty, 1968, Catalogue, no. 144. Another box and cover carved with pine over a diaper ground was included in the National Palace Museum Special Exhibition of Qing Monochromes, Catalogue, p. 51, no. 14. Compare also with a bowl carved with nine dragons and with a red glaze to imitate lacquer, included in the Chinese Univerity of Hong Kong Exhibition, Qing Imperial Porcelain, 1995, Catalogue, no. 74.
