A YELLOW AND GREEN 'DRAGON AND PHOENIX' BOWL
ENCIRCLED KANGXI SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Finely potted with rounded sides rising to an everted rim, the upper band of the exterior decorated with a pair of striding dragons pursuing a flaming pearl above a lower section of phoenix roundel divided by trefoil clouds, the interior central medallion painted in underglaze- blue within a double circle enclosing a shou (longevity) character in simplified seal script amidst scrolling clouds

Lot Essay

An identical bowl in the Tsui Museum of Art is illustrated in the Catalogue, Ceramics IV, no. 111 (QPK007). It is recorded that bowls of this design were made for a guifei (highest-ranking imperial concubine) or a fei (imperial concubine), ibid., p. 64.
