The exterior reserved in white with two incised five-clawed dragons striding across symmetrically billowing and breaking waves in mutual pursuit of flaming pearls, the interior with a sinuous dragon within a medallion

Lot Essay

Yongzheng bowls of this pattern are quite rare. Compare with a similar bowl sold in these Rooms, 8 October 1990, lot 569. Another bowl of this type but with iron-red dragons was sold in these Rooms, 26 September 1989, lot 633.

For an example of a Xuande prototype refer to the Illustrated Catalogue of Ming Dynasty Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, pl. 62, although similar in shape and decoration, the dragons' heads are turned back.
