Lot Essay

The presence of masks in the adornment of the deity is rarely seen, and when it occurs the carving is especially finely detailed and delicate. Two other figures where masks suspend sash-like raiments are illustrated by Matsubara in Chugoku Bukkyo Chokoku Silun, vol.2 (plates), figs.559-562. A figure of standing Avalokitesvara illustrated by Akiyama and Matsubara, Arts of China, Buddhist Cave Temples New Researches, fig.153, wears very similarly-detailed chains of jewellery and is attributed to the Shaanxi school.
