Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
One capsule damaged. Badly bin-soiled and damaged labels. Levels: two base of neck, one top and one just below top-shoulder
In his Notes on Wine and Food date 2.9.49 "A visit to the chais ..... easily the best '48 I had tasted".
A vintage if not maligned, understandably overlooked wedged as it is between the opulent 1947 and magnificent 1949. Several notes, all reported in The Great Vintage Wine Book II, including a Bordeaux Club bottle at Christie's in November 1989, when Jack Plumb served it after a '67 Mouton, '59 Margaux, '53 Haut-Brion and Avery's '50 Pétrus. It acquitted itself well: crisp, delicious though still with remnants of the 1948 tannin and acidity. M.B.
