The slightly recurved finely watered double-edged blade with medial ridge on each side, the vase-shaped hilt with five lotus buds forming the pommel carved overall with leaves and flowerheads within gold inlaid borders and with gold inlaid flowers set with rubies and emeralds, in red velvet-covered wooden scabbard with associated jade locket carved with foliage, locket with minor chip

Lot Essay

The vase and lotus bud design was originally one of the eight auspicious objects which were present on important Hindu occasions to bring good fortune. By the 18th Century this imagery had been assimilated into Muslim canons of taste.
