CENTRAL OR NORTH INDIA, 17TH CENTURY
The slightly recurved finely watered double-edged blade with medial ridge on each side, the hilt of mutton-fat jade and comprising oval guard with cusped border and bud-shaped quillon, baluster grip with pommel and knuckle-guard shaped as leaves, the former with turned spherical finial, the latter cut with leaves and bud-shaped finial, in red velvet-covered wooden scabbard with silver chape pierced and chased with foliage, minor damage to guard, one bud missing

A similar dagger is catalogued by Berndt Augustin in Oriental Splendour, Islamic Art from German Private Collections, Museum fr Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, 1993, p.212. He cites '12 other known examples' and suggest dates of 1660-1700
