A CARVED ZITAN ARCHAISTIC POURING VESSEL
SILVER-INLAID CHONGZHEN JIAXU CYCLICAL DATE, CORRESPONDING TO A.D. 1634

Of oval cross-section, the exterior carved with confronted stylised dragons above taotie-masks, all within panels divided by vertical flanges below the deep curving spout and at the sides, the base of the vessel decorated with lotus-sprays above a high splayed foot, the C-shaped handle inscribed with silver inlay in seal script (chip to foot and minor extremity nicks)

Lot Essay

The inscription Chongzhen jiaxu la yue fong Sun Hanyang shi zi, translates as made in imitation of Sun Hanyang during the last month of Chongzhen year, corresponding to A.D. 1634. Sun Hanyang (1533-1611) was a very well-known artist of the late Ming period.
