FIRST EDITION. Parkinson intended to fill a gap in English literature on the identification and interpretation of fossils, and also, in Volume III, introduced to the general British public the new discoveries of William Smith, Lamarck and Cuvier. Volume I ("The Vegetable Kingdom") contained Parkinson's own theory of the vegetable origin of bituminous products; Volume II covered fossil zoophytes, and Volume III the "fossil starfish, echinin, shells, insects, amphibia, mammalia &c".
