Colophon leaf preceding plates, 20 engraved plates comprising 10 plates on thick paper, each with several numbered figures, and 10 plates on India paper, the first 9 being outline key plates for the fully engraved plates, the 10th a "Tafel der Durchschnitte", all by Joseph Wilhelm Eduard d'Alton (unsigned). (Marginal tear to plate VI, some minor marginal foxing to plates, uniform slight browning to text leaves.) Original plain green paper boards (lacking spine).
VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of the expanded German version, greatly enriched with d'Alton's illustrations, of Pander's dissertation on the chick embryo, published earlier the same year. Pander amplified and rearranged his text for this privately printed edition, for which he commissioned detailed illustrations from his colleague and collaborator the German naturalist d'Alton (1772-1840), the first illustrations of the development of the chick embryo.
