Charles Dumas, who has kindly desciphered the inscription on the verso, suggests that this depicts the dunes between the artist's home town The Hague and Wassenaar, close to estate Clingendael. Similar topographical views of the same format, possibly from the same sketchbook, are in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum, B. Broos, M. Schapelhouman, Nederlandse Tekenaars geboren tussen 1600 en 1660, Amsterdam/Zwolle, 1993, nos. 27-31, illustrated. The broad, quick technique, with strong chiaroscuro effects, is characteristic of the artist.
