Lot Essay
In the 1660s to 1680s, Cruyl travelled to Italy several times recording his impressions in drawings, often in series. The present lot was presumably part of a series of ten drawings, Jatta, op.cit., nos. 283-92, figs. 109-118. Cruyl's comparable view of Tivoli, Jatta, op.cit., no. 39, fig. 130, shows differences in the architecture, and may have been inspired by the present lot.
