Lot Essay

This view corresponds to a drawing of the same courtyard by Wyck in the Historisch Museum, Amsterdam (B. Broos, M. Schapelhouman, Nederlandse Tekenaars geboren tussen 1600 en 1660, Amsterdam Zwolle, 1993, pp. 235-6, no. 186). Like the present lot, that would seem to be based on a very comparable drawing in the National Gallery of Scotland, K. Andrews, Catalogue of Netherlandish Drawings in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh, 1985, I, p. 107, no. D991, fig. 741. The latter does not include the gate at the left, nor is it as finished as the Amsterdam drawing, which led Schapelhouman to suggest that the Amsterdam version was a later studio repetition, which the present lot could also be.
