Lot Essay

This is comparable in subject, technique and format to a drawing sold at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 16 November 1993, lot 92, which is similarly signed and dated, and was sold as lot 114 in the 1974 Christie's sale. The attribution of these drawings to Rochus van Veen has been doubted, and alternative attributions to Johannes Bronkhorst (1648-1727) or Paulus Knogh (1737-1802) have been suggested, implying that the signature and date on the present lot are a later addition.
