Lot Essay

Picart trained and worked as a reproductive printmaker in his native Paris until 1710, temporarily working in Antwerp and Holland in 1696-7. In 1711 he established himself in Amsterdam where he soon became one of the most important and influential artists illustrating books and copying contemporary and earlier artists for large illustrated works. A comparable drawing also dated 1725 was sold in these Rooms, 10 November 1997, lot 183, illustrated.
