HARRINGTON "JUNIOR" COACH
ONE FAMILY OWNERSHIP FROM NEW.
Chassis No. 2196
Engine No. 859875
Registration No. HTM 112
1st Registered: 22nd Dec 1949
This remarkably original vehicle was commissioned new in 1949 by the Grandfather of the current vendor. Purpose-built by Johnson's "Midget Motors" for Harringtons of Brighton, it is a well constructed working model of an excursion coach of the immediate post-war period.
The coachbuilt body is of aluminium on ash framing mounted upon a sturdy chassis powered by a Villiers 2-stroke single cylinder engine of 125cc. The driving position is central and it can carry a further 2 or 3 small passengers. The paintwork is original and is finished in the maroon and Blue livery of "Costins Coaches" of Bedfordshire as first commissioned when new. It was used for parades and promotional activities early in its career, but latterly has been in long-term storage since the company was taken over in the 1970's. The original pneumatic tyres still hold air, and it is hoped that the motor will have been recommissioned by the time of sale.
Once, similar machines would have been a regular feature of many holiday resorts and this would be a popular exhibit at historic rallies around the country. It comes with an original "brown" old-style log-book, but a V5 has never been issued. It is hoped that the registration number may be re-commissioned from the DVLA. The photograph illustrates the Festival of Britain Jubilee parade in Dunstable, 1951.
