Gems for the Drawing Room. Poems by F.W.N.Bayley. London: Paul Jerrard, 1852[-1852-n.d.]. 3 works in one volume, imperial 4 (360 x 260mm). Lithographed throughout. Titles, text and decorative flourishes all printed in gilt, 36 full-page hand-coloured illustrations (24 of flowers, 12 of humming-birds) by and after Jerrard, one on paper mounted. (Occasional light browning.) Contemporary green half morocco gilt, g.e. (joints weak, spine chipped at head and foot). Provenance: Emily Mandel (inscriptions, one dated 1870).

Rare. A fine selection of plates of humming-birds and flower bouquets, combining natural history with high victorian design. Paul Jerrard was the publisher of a series of gift books of the highest quality. The present sammelband includes three of the four works he published under the collective title Gems for the Drawing Room: ...Fruit & Flowers, 1852, [vol.I]; ..Fruit & Flowers, 1852, [vol.II]; The Humming Bird Keepsake, [n.d.]. A fourth work ..Birds was also available. An advertisement leaf (sometimes found with the first work) notes that the series is published "In four books, Imperial 4to, price 31s. 6d. each. Comprising exquisitely coloured drawings of Fruit, Flowers and Birds... Printed in Gold, with ornamental Gold Borders... the whole form a truly elegant suite of Table Books, most appropriate for Marriage, Birthday, or Annual Presents".
