Russia, probably Moscow, 1682-1696
Of traditional form, the outer rim with long inscription in Russian within borders and cartouches, the domed centre repoussé, chased and engraved with the Imperial double-headed eagle within geometric borders, the raised prow engraved with floral and foliate spray with acorn finial, the raised flat handle with similar spray and engraved with the double-headed eagle, apparently unmarked

Lot Essay

The inscription reads: 'In 1689 By the Grace of God we great Lord Tsars and Great Princes Ioann Alekseevich and Petr Alekseevich and the Great Lady .. the Tsarevna and Great Princess Sofia Alekseevna of all Great, Little and White Russia Autocrats presented this kovsh to the Kevralets Kirilo Dostovalov for his work and for the increase in taxes to the treasury for the year 1688 compared with the year 1687', and further engraved 'This kovsh is laid in the treasury of the Holy and Righteous Artemii Verkolskii the Wonderworker by the Kevralets Kirilo Dostovalov in memory of his parents and for the saving of his soul'.
