Zhang Zhiwan (1811-1897), a scroll in ink on silk
depicting retreats set among pine and rockwork in a mountainus river landscape -- 15¼in. x 12¾in. (38.5cms x 32.4cms), signed Zhang Zhiwan, dated xinsi year (1881), summer, one seal of the artist: Zhi Wan.
Zhang Zhiwan was a native of Nanpi in Hebei Province. He was very skilled in landscape painting, working in an elegant style resembling Wang Hui's works. He won the 'Zhangyuan' honour (principal graduate) and his official career included the post of Grand Secretary in 1847. Together with the artist Dai Xi (1801-1860), they became known as 'Zhang of the North and Dai of the South'. Zhang Zhiwan was also a collector of fine art and a poet.
