Guan Liang (1900-1987), 'Sun Wukong', a hanging scroll in ink and colour on paper

Guan Liang was born in Panyu in Guandong Province and entered the Japan Pacific Art academy in 1917. He later taught at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. He briefly taught at the Kunming National Fine Arts School. In 1940 he held his first exhibition. In 1945 he began teaching at the National Art Academy of Huangzhou and held many solo exhibitions. In 1957, with Li Keran, he went to East Germany and held an exhibition at the Berlin Science Institute. In 1960 he retired from his position as Director of the research Department at Shanghai University, where he taught Chinese painting.
