Wu Zuoren (b.1908), a scroll in ink on paper
depicting camels in a desert landscape -- 27in. x 18in. (68.6cms x 45.8cms), signed Zuoren, dated xinyou year (1981), two seals.

Wu Zuoren was born in Suzhou, in the county of Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province. In his early years he studied under Xu Beihong and in 1927 entered the Shanghai University of Art. From 1930-1935 he studied Fine Arts in France and Belgium. After returning to China he became involved in several art institutes. He was elected to many offices and from the 1950's he taught at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and later became President of the Academy. In 1982 he won a Golden Award at the exhibition of Contemporary Chinese Art in Paris. In 1985 the French Government conferred on him the highest medal for art and literature.
