COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
Similar examples are illustrated in Derek Roberts Carriage and Other Travelling Clocks Schiffer 1993, pp.43-44, figs.3-5a,b, and Charles Allix and Peter Bonnert Carriage Clocks Antique Collectors' Club 1974, p.65, plate II/36. Allix describes this clock as a pendule portative (ie, portable clock) as opposed to being a pendule de voyage (carriage clock). Both writers also refer to it as being an 'exhibition clock'. The use of the P.G. Breveté stamp is customary on Garnier's chaff-cutter clocks; as with the present example, the clocks which Allix and Roberts discuss also have further retail signatures.
For a description of the chaff-cutter escapement, see footnote to lot 36.
