An unusual French gilt-brass carriage timepiece with ivory marquetry panels

The case with mounts modelled as bunches of grapes to the top angles and husk and rosette mounts to the base, the side and top panels of ivory inlaid with woods and engraved brass in leafy designs, the top panel signed FD Bté, with conforming dial inlaid with a cockerel below the pewter inlaid Roman chapter ring with black painted numerals, the single barrel movement with platform cylinder escapement numbered 2267 on the backplate

Lot Essay

The firm of Duvinage & Harinckouk took over the house of Giroux in 1867, continuing until 1882. This style of marquetry was patented by Ferdinand Duvinage. A clock of related design was sold Sotheby's London 3 October 1996, lot 374.
