Lot Essay
Indian trade silver was produced for the Office of Indian Trade and presented to Indian warriors. Varying in size, texture and decoration, all gorgets, or half-moons, feature two small holes in the tips through which a ribbon was threaded. A similar example engraved with Royal armorials made by Hester Bateman, London, 1770/71 is illustrated in Martha Hamilton, Silver in the Fur Trade 1680-1820, 1995, p. 71, illus. 04-41.
