Lot Essay

The present clock typifies the passion during the Empire period for Ancient history. The figure surmounting the case represents the education of Alexander the Great. The relief on the base depicts Aristotle, the young Alexander the Great and his parents Philip of Macedon and Olympia. A clock of this model is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Prschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 349, fig. 5.6.6.
