RICHARDSON, John (1741-?1811). A Dictionary, Persian, Arabic, and English ... to which is prefixed a dissertation on the language, literature, and manners of eastern nations. Oxford: Clarendon Press, sold by J. Murray of London and D. Prince of Oxford, 1777-1780. 2 volumes, 2 (432 x 265mm). (Occasional light browning or old dampstaining.) Later cloth, leather lettering-pieces on spines (small tears to lettering-pieces). Provenance: The Royal Institution, London (small gilt stamps on spines).
FIRST EDITION. The work is essentially an abridgement of Meninski's Oriental Thesaurus with the exclusion of the Turkish words and some additions from Golius and Castell. It was revised and expanded throughout the 19th century before finally being "re-constructed" by Dr. Steingass in 1892. (2)
