Lot Essay

Cf: John Romer, Valley of the Kings, Michael O'Mara Ltd., 1988, p. 197

The style for this chair is due to the contemporary vogue for pieces with an oriental flavour such as the Thebes stool and others (See Lot 48). Many similar examples seem to be an amalgam of various patternings and symbols, yet this example seems to follow one specific original. The accompanying sketch by Howard Carter shows a chair excavated in 1904/5 which seems to match exactly the example of this lot. Interestingly another chair, sold in these rooms 13 December 1989, is also an almost exact replica of another piece excavated from the same tombs which is now in the Cairo Museum.
