Gore Island, just south of Cape Verde Peninsula, housed captured Africans before they were shipped to the America as slaves. Its importance in this enourmous traffic has been exaggerated, but the small island has become a place of pilgrimage and an important symbol. Under French control from 1916 to 1960. it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978.
