Lot Essay

Although the life and career of John Cordrey are somewhat obscure he probably began life as a coach-painter. Cordrey appears to have specialized in coaching scenes and his known works, which are architecturally and intricately drawn, are almost exclusively of coaches except for the occasional hunting picture.

This picture shows a plantation and tower to the left of the coach which may be the Clockcase (to the east of Virginia Water) or the Belvedere (to the south). These towers were built as eye-catchers on the top of hills and were surrounded by a plantation of trees, planted in the mid to late 18th Century.
