French olive morocco of c. 1587-1601 with the ARMS OF JACQUES-AUGUSTE DE THOU and his first wife Marie de Barbanon de Cany [Olivier 216, fer 5 and 6] in gilt on sides, their monogram in spine compartments, gilt edges (some very light rubbing, lightly faded at spine and edges). FIRST EDITION of this collection of works by early Christian writers. Salvian's work concerns the justification of divine providence; Maximus's homilies provide rich evidence for the survival of pagan beliefs in northern Italy; St. Pacian of Barcelona discusses the penitential system in Spain and bears witness to theological doctrine in the church before Ambrose, Jerome and St. Augustine; and Sulpicius's history is valuable for its treatment of Priscillian. Adams S-200; Renouard, Alde 1564, no.5.
