The rim with a pierced leaf decoration above a waisted neck, the body with a flower and acanthus frieze, flanked to each side by a ringed lion mask, on a spreading oval socle, on a square plinth inscribed to the front COADE LAMBETH 1792; on a modern rectangular stoneware pedestal with an oval patera to the front, on a stepped moulded plinth
The vase: 45 in. (114.5 cm.) wide; 26 in. (67 cm.) high The pedestal: 29 in. (74 cm.) wide; 18 in. (47 cm.) high; 23 in. (58.5 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

An elegant garden urn bearing Eleanor Coade's Lambeth Manufactory stamp and date l792. Her pattern for love's sacred urn, of oval krater-vase form enriched with palms and festive lion-masks tied by a flowered ribbon-guilloche, features in the catalogue 'Etchings of Coade's Artificial Stone Manufacture' l785 (no. l05).
