Lot Essay

Jean Sen, called 'le Pre' and born circa 1695, was the first of a famous dynasty of chair-makers and was established rue de Clry. He became master joiner around 1709, but used his stamp only from 1743 when new status made it compulsory. Very few signed examples are known and he must have stopped his production shortly after that date. It is known, however, that he was still active in 1746 when he was listed as a creditor of Claude Heurtaut, (see lot 34 of this sale for a giltwood fauteuil by the same menusier).
