This sheet is one of a series of one hundred studies for the chiaroscuro frescoes in the courtyard of the Castello at Ferrara. Each depicts two ancestors of the d'Este family, designed by Ligorio and painted for Duke Alfonso d'Este by Bartolomeo and Girolamo Faccini in 1577.
Twenty-four drawings from the same series are in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and others in Munich, London, Florence, Stuttgart and New York. Sheets from the series were also sold at Christie's London, 2 July 1991, lot 78, and at Christie's New York, 28 January 1999, lot 46.
