Lot Essay

The field design of this dish is very similar to that of one in the Louvre Museum (The Age of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, Sydney, 1990, no.70, p.85). Both this dish, and a second example in France, are dated by Atasoy and Raby to 1565-70 (Atasoy, N. and Raby, J.: Iznik, the Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989, nos.425 and 426, p.234). The grey-blue tone of the green in the present dish is similar to a number of pieces of this early 'Rhodian' palette period when the potters were still perfecting the colours.
