Lot Essay

George Street (1867-1936), journalist and author, was a very close and old friend of Max Beerbohm. He wrote essays, nostalgic books about the 18th century, and one more widely read work entitled The Autobiography of a Boy. When Street died, Max wrote an appreciation in The Times in which he said that Street "was of all the men that I have known the most exquisitely civilized. I never heard him say...one foolish thing, or dull thing, or an ill-natured thing, or a thing that had not somewhat of the flavour of the very best old dry sherry."
