These chairs derive from the rococo designs published in the eight books of de la Cour, an engraver and ornamentalist, presumably of French origin, who worked in England from 1741-1747. An engraving of circa 1745 with similar chair designs is reproduced in P.Ward-Jackson, English Furniture Designs of the Eighteenth Century, 1958, pl.19. Other similar designs were published by Matthias Darly in his Secorn Book of Chairs, circa 1751 9reproduced in C.Gilbert, 'The Early Furniture Designs of Matthias Darly, F.H.S.J., 1975, pl. 74-77.
