These chairs are similar to seat furniture supplied to George, Prince of Wales by the firm of Elward, Marsh and Tatham for the Royal Pavilion at Brighton. Their overall decoration in simulated bamboo reflects the revived taste for things Chinese fashionable in the 1790's and early 1800's. The firm provided a related set of '36 carved bamboo jappanned chairs' for the Eating Room at Brighton which were invoiced at £100.16.00 in 1801 (G.Beard and C.Gilbert eds., Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, 1986, p. 278). An example from this set is illustrated in F.Collard, Regency Furniture, 1985, p.198. A chair of virtually identical design from the Bedroom at Brighton is illustrated in C.Musgrave, Regency Furniture, 1961, pl.45b.
