Africa
Pen, ink and wash manuscript map of the African continent including The Azores, Cape Verde Islands, Zanzibar, and Magagascar, on paper, [c.1830, watermark: J. Whatman 1830], (47 x 38cm.)
The map covers the whole of the African continent on a rectilinear grid and includes The Azores, the Cape Verde Islands, St Helena, Madagascar, the Archipel des Comores, Madagascar, Mauritius, Zanzibar, and Socotra. Numerous coastal place names are given and the major rivers are identified. The equator is indicated with a graticule, and the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn are also shown. Earlier cartographers, of the 16th and 17th centuries usually speculated, on the basis of information given by Herodotus and Ptolemy, on the location and extent of inland waterways and features. However, from the 1820s many maps of Africa included only known information. The lakes of East Africa are not shown here, that area and the basin of Luabla and the further reaches of the Zambesi are marked simply 'Not Explored'.
