Henry Ellis (1721-1806)
A Voyage to Hudson's-Bay by the Dobbs Galley and California, in the years 1746 and 1747, for discovering a North West Passage. Dublin: for George and Alexander Ewing, 1749. 8 (19.4 x 11.5cm.) Folding hand-coloured engraved map. (Spotting at margins.) Contemporary calf (rebacked). The expedition, on which Ellis acted as hydrographer, surveyor and mineralogist, put an end to the idea that the passage must lie through Hudson's Bay. His account of the voyage, first published in London in 1748, contains valuable observations on the eskimos, a people then almost unknown. Sabin 22312.
