inscribed 'given to Captain R.F. Scott by Queen Alexandra in 1910' on the reverse
brown toned mounted carbon print, unframed
11 x 9in. (29.2 x 24.2cm.)
Provenance
Scott's departures on the Discovery in 1902 and on the Terra Nova in 1910 spanned the reign of Edward VII. The King had come to the throne after the death of Queen Victoria in January 1901 and inspected the Discovery at Cowes in August, presenting Scott with the insignia of the M.V.O., and cabling congratulations to Scott in New Zealand in 1903. The King died on 6 May 1910, just under a month before Terra Nova sailed from London docks. King George V succeeded the throne. He had been vice-patron of Scott's Discovery expedition, and his portrait would decorate Scott's Cabin at Cape Evans. ('On the wall in Scott's quarters hung a large portrait of King George', G. Hattersley-Smith (ed.), The Norwegian with Scott, Tryggve Gran's Antarctic Diary 1910-1913, London, 1984, p.81)
