British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913

Tower Tea. A 1lb. tin of blended Indian and Ceylon tea, [circa 1910], 11.2 x 11.2 x 11cm., the sealed lid and four sides with original pasted-on paper wrapping, each of the sides with lettering, i.e. 'Tower Tea More than 1 Million Cups of this Delicious Tea are consumed daily throughout the year'. (Some oxidisation, wrapping discoloured and rubbed with loss). Provenance: British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913; Norman Chamberlain (collector of Tea memorabilia).

A rare survival, and a reminder of the very British nature of the expedition. Saturday, May 27, 1911: Scott notes that (after a lecture by Bowers on sledging diets, a discussion followed) 'Feeling went deepest on the subject of tea versus cocoa; admitting all that can be said concerning stimulation and reaction, I am inclined to see much in favour of tea. Why should not one be mildly stimulated during the marching hours if one can cope with reaction by profounder rest during the hours of inaction?' (Scott's Last Expedition, I, p.290).
