British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913
S.S. Terra Nova R.Y.S. - R.F. Scott and others. A collection of nine signatures of expedition members, Simonstown, South Africa: [15 August-] 2 September 1910, the signatures on a single sheet extracted from an autograph book (10 x 15.5cm.) with a mounted B.A.E. symbol cut down from a sheet of expedition notepaper, most with their rank noted in ink in a contemporary hand, the same hand noting that the expedition 'Sailed from Simons Bay Septr. 2nd 1910', laid down on card.
The signatories comprise: Scott; Edward Evans; Victor Campbell; Henry Bowers; G.Murray Levick; Harry Pennell; George Simpson; Tryggve Gran and Edgar W. Riley. They form a good representative cross-section of expedition members, including two members of the final polar party, other members of the shore party and members of the ship party (including Riley the Chief Engineer, who was dismissed by Scott in Australia). With 'Teddy' Evans in commmand, the Terra Nova arrived at Simonstown on 15 August, 1910, Scott had already arrived in the country and was busy in Pretoria trying to raise money from the South African government. He rejoined the ship and after a series of social events (at which the present collection was probably made), the expedition sailed for Australia on 2 September 1910.
