A KIRMAN POLYCHROME GLAZED LARGE STORAGE JAR
SOUTH EAST PERSIA, 17TH CENTURY
The massive shouldered rounded form rising to the short mouth, the shoulder decorated with narrow bands running down from the mouth of meandering blue and white leafy vine alternating with underglaze slip painted dense floral sprays, a band of angular floral sprays below, stylised clouds above the vertical banded foot, the foot and mouth damaged, crude metal replacement for the mouth, minute holes, very slight staining
12in. (31.7cm.) high

Lot Essay

The size of this jar makes it exceptional amongst polychrome decorated Safavid pottery. It is also most interesting as it combines the technique of slip-painted dense floral sprays associated normally with Kirman (see lots 348 & 351) with the black outlines for the blue and white areas of decoration, a facet which Arthur Lane thought might indicate a Meshed provenance.
