Lot Essay

The Ceylon Mounted Infantry, 125 strong, was raised in January 1900 and reached South Africa in February. They fought with Lord Roberts' Force and were praised by him for their work on the advance to Bloemfontein. A second Contingent, 103 strong, served in South Africa in 1901 and these 228 men constituted Ceylon's total contribution to the War.
