As part of his plan to mollify the Colonials, who considered that they had been ignored by the Regular Army, Lord Roberts authorised the creation of a Body Guard in January 1900. The original Commander-in-Chief's Body Guard consisted of 46 men drawn from the South African Volunteer Regiments and it was expanded to fighting proportions in November 1900.
