Engraved throughout, title with hand-coloured floral border, 57 (of 59) hand-coloured plates after drawings by Charton. (Lacking plates 7 and 33, some plates with outer margins shaved into engraved border with loss of numbering, others with blank sections of margins torn away or clean tears into plate area.) Late-nineteenth-century purple cloth (spine lacking). Provenance: Calico Printers' Association Limited ('Subscription Pattern Library' label and stamp).
A rare series including a wide variety of natural history subjects, mostly flowers, with animals and some figurative scenes. The majority have a rococo/chinoiserie style, a number are given exotic locations, and the series includes plants representing China, Japan, India, Africa, Europe, North and South America. The work was produced as a pattern book for the use of craftsmen and artists, the provenance of the present copy gives an indication of one of the more specific uses for the plates.
