Letterpress title. 17 hand-coloured lithographic plates on thin card by and after Gustav Mtzel, printed by C.Bhm of Berlin. Unbound as issued in original half cloth portfolio (some tears to cloth).
FIRST EDITION, RARE. A fine series of plates from an important monograph on the grouse and its hybrids. The last copy sold at auction was the Bradley Martin set in 1989. Mtzel, an animal painter born and trained in Berlin, was perhaps best known for his work for his work on A.E.Brehm's Illustriertes Tierleben, but the present work is undoubtedly his masterpiece. The plates were drawn on stone by Mtzel from his own drawings, printed by Bhm of Berlin and then, according to Nissen, hand-coloured by M.Schneider. Cf. Anker 335; cf.
