Lot Essay

After completing his studies in Munich and Milan, Unterberger went to Dsseldorf where he came under the influence of Oswald and Andreas Achenbach. This exchange of ideas was a two way process, however, and the dramatic light in Unterberger's Italian landscapes of Italy is a feature that the two brothers adopted in their own works. As Erika Mayr-Oehring points out: "The enchanting way in which he rendered the southern atmosphere with the sun and sea, with light reflection and bustling activity, made him a sought-after 'salon painter' (Catalogue of the exhibition Faszination Landschaft, Osterreichische Landschaftsmaler des 19. Jahrhunderts auf Reisen, Residenzgalerie Salzburg, 23 July-24 September, p. 228).
