Lot Essay

The area depicted in the present work is Toledo, the heart of the old capital and now the commercial and administrative centre of modern Naples. On the left one can see the Castel Nuovo, started by Charles I of Anjou in 1279 and rebuilt in the quattrocento by Alfonso V of Aragon (later Alfonso I, King of Naples and Sicily). The castle is constructed around five imposing cylindrical towers, two of which flank the early Renaissance Arco di Trionfo celebrating Alfonso's triumphant entry into the city in 1443.
