A SILK-ON-LINEN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER
Signed Elizabeth Noble, dated 1812
Worked in blue, rust, yellow, brown, black, peach and grey silk threads on a linen ground in eight alphabetical registers in various stitches above a horizontal verse inscribed, "When youths soft season shall be oer/And scenes of childhood charm no more/My riper years with joy shall see/This proof of infant industry" flanked by birds on trees over flowers and foliate baskets above an enclosed verse inscribed, "Elizabeth Noble wrought this in the year of our/Lord 1812 in the 9th year of her age", all enclosed by a meandering vine border issuing tulips and rosettes
